I am on a roll - another week and another new quilt to show you, this one too was started and finished in 2021. I love all sorts of quilts, from modern quilts to art quilts - I can appreciate them all - but traditional scrappy quilts steal my heart every time. I have had this quilt, a classic 6-pointed star quilt, on my quilting buckets lists for quite some time, and am pleased to have now ticked it off.
This quilt has been English paper pieced and it consists of just one shape: a sixty degree diamond with 2 inch sides. I told you, I have fallen deep into the English paper piecing rabbit hole. I have made numerous paper pieced quilts now, and there are more to come. I find it so relaxing, and the results are effortlessly accurate. I love the whole process; from choosing and cutting fabrics, to basting paper pieces, and long evenings of whip stitching.
Other than the background fabric, this quilt was made from stash fabrics. I have randomly selected fabrics, prints and colors, although with somewhat of a bias towards my hoarded Japanese fabric stash. I adore the saturated colors of those Japanese fabrics. The background fabric was purchased specifically for this project.
The quilt has been machine quilted (domestic sewing machine) with edge to edge vertical lines, spaced one inch apart. As I've used a shape with two inch sides, there are lots of stitching guide points to ensure that the quilting lines stay nice and straight. I do also use a quilting guide attached to the walking foot, which also helps to keep the lines parallel.
Backing fabric: Octopus in Blush - Mendocino by Heather Ross |
Now for the back of the quilt I have used a rather special fabric which has been languishing in my "quilt back" stash for a while. This fabric is from the Mendocino collection by Heather Ross. It is the softest pink background fabric, scattered with octopuses. Rather sweet. Plus I do actually like using my fabric from stash.
For the binding I have used a soft green and white stripe fabric from the Merry Go Round collection by American Jane for Moda Fabrics. Again, pulled from stash. Super satisfying.

Rita, it is gorgeous in the palette that is uniquely yours. I can't even hope to do anything like this as EPP is beyond me. Me and my vintage Singer 301 is how I need to roll.
ReplyDeleteAnother beauty! I love EPP, and hope to do much more of it after I retire from working next year.
ReplyDeleteAnother beauty Rita. A simple design worked so effectively. I'm amazed you can part with your EPP quilts in which you have invested so much time.
ReplyDeleteWow that is so beautiful! I love the background fabric. The use of text prints is very engaging. Just a lovely, fun, warm and welcoming quilt.
ReplyDeleteLove it
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautifull quilt, love the bright and cheerfull colours
ReplyDeleteGosh, this is just stunning! Though I call myself a "modern" quiltmaker, I too am a push-over for a pretty scrappy quilt. You've done such a good job with this one! I'm an EPPer too, though I'm not as quick at it as you are. I have been stitching my EPP projects with 60-weight Libby Lehman Bottom Line gray thread by Superior Threads. May I ask? What do you use to stitch yours? Do you switch colors for every piece?
