Delectable Mountains Scrap Quilt

Work in Progress.

Scrap quilts and simple patchwork piecing are my absolute favorite and I do like to try my hand at different traditional blocks. I have loved working on this Delectable Mountains Scrap Quilt top.  With its numerous patchwork pieces the Delectable Mountains block - a traditional quilt block - isn't exactly a quick patchwork fix, but it also is not as difficult or as intimidating as it may appear to be.

This quilt top is inspired by the Rummage Quilt Pattern by Stephanie Dunphy (which I purchased way by in 2016 and has been on my "to make" list since then) but as often is the case when I use a pattern, I have resized the block - I have made the block smaller - as well as played with the layout and added Half Square Triangle units. I also found the Delectable Mountain Quilt Block tutorial by the Fat Quarter Shop (a free pattern download) very useful as the process includes over-sizing components of the block and trimming back units for accuracy. (The Fat Quarter Shop block tutorial is for an 8½ inch block. The Delectable Mountains block size for my quilt is 5½" x 5½" - including seam allowances).

I have alternated the Delectable Mountains Block with a Half Square Triangle unit and I have randomly chosen fabrics from stash (most are stash favorites!) while still ensuring that there is sufficient contrast between the blocks and block units. I think you'll recognize quite a few of the fabrics used in this quilt top. Some of the fabrics are from more recent fabric collection releases, others have been part of my stash for quite some time. Some are "modern", and others are reproductions prints. Many are fabric stash basics (dots, checks, stripes). They all just work together ...

I have had a wonderful week working on this quilt top; the fabric/color play was so much fun! Piecing and trimming to size all those small half square triangle units can be tedious, but I tackled five blocks at a time to keep it interesting, and to feel like I was making good progress.

  2. As usual, you wow me with your work. Your quilt has the illusion of being set on point, yet it isn't. Lovely, lovely quilt. Thanks.

  3. When you look at the entire quilt top, the mountains give a ripple effect across the patchwork! Very cool.

  4. Such a timely post for me! I started Stephanie’s Rummage quilt awhile back, packed it away for the winter, and haven’t yet pulled it back out. But just yesterday, I was thinking it was time! Yours is beautiful. I love how you changed it up a bit! You must Sew in your sleep!
