It is back to basics for me this week! Keeping it simple gives me the greatest pleasure in sewing and I could not resist turning a beautiful piece of grey chambray fabric that I have had in my fabric stash for some time, into a Checkerboard Quilt with luxury Liberty of London fabric to add brilliant color and pattern.
There is comfort in the familiar rhythm that is repeat patchwork sewing and I thoroughly enjoy piecing this traditional patchwork quilt design - A Checkerboard Quilt - and scrap quilts with lots of small pieces! This quilt was strip-pieced and I followed the same piecing method as set out in my Checkerboard Strip Piecing Tutorial (I cut my fabric strips 2.5" x 11" and cross cut the strip sets at 2.5" inch intervals). I also spent quite some time randomizing the strip-pieced sets by taking strip sets apart, as well as adding individual patchwork pieces (for example all fussy cut fabrics).
My collection of Liberty of London Tana Lawn fabrics is significant, and I really do love working with these fabrics. For this quilt I have used many of my stashed Liberty fabrics plus I have added a few quilting weight cottons because I cannot resist adding a stash basic - dots + gingham in particular - to each and every quilt that I make. I love stash basics! The gingham fabric used in this quilt are in fact pieces of reclaimed fabric from men's shirts.

Working on this quilt has brought some sunshine to our wintry days. Yes, it is Winter here and while we don't have much to complain about - it certainly doesn't snow here in Melbourne - it only takes two overcast days in a row and we start with all the gloomy feelings!
I have made good progress on this quilt and hope to have more to show you soon!
Thank you for stopping by,
Rita

That quilt is Beautiful! The gray lends a wonderful calming effect to all of that floral activity. I just love the Liberty of London fabrics but am never quite sure I need a full dose of them.
ReplyDeleteLove the soft chambray and of course the Liberty fabric is such quality. This one won't last long Rita!

ReplyDeleteRita, I love these prints and yes I love putting scraps in everything. Mens shirts are indeed perfect for quilts.
ReplyDeleteI like the chambray. I have some old old pink chambray I am using in a few quilts right now.
Happy winter
I love the gray as a neutral. It makes the florals pop!
