Last week I made a baby quilt for a friend who very recently welcomed a baby boy. I LOVE making baby quilts and while I had obviously known for some time that this baby was due to arrive any time now, the gender of the baby remained a surprise. I was really stuck on ideas for this gender neutral baby quilt that I had hoped to make well before the baby's arrival (so much procrastinating!) but as soon as I heard that the baby was a boy I immediately had a plan ... and a baby boy baby quilt (as well as a gender neutral baby quilt) was born!

This is a quick and easy baby quilt made from squares, half square triangles, and hour glass blocks. The quilt top came together in a day and I basted, quilted, and added the binding over the next few days. The fabrics used are a mix of quilting cottons, cotton/linen blend fabrics (Essex Yarn Dyed Classic Wovens), as well as pieces of fabric from reclaimed men's shirts.  Stripes + Gingham = 💝. It really is such a classic and timeless combination, especially in this red, white, blue, and black color combination.

For the back of the quilt I have used my go-to backing fabric ~ Newsprint in Spackle by Carrie Bloomston from the Dreamer collection.  I have numerous odd size pieces of this fabric left over from piecing together previous quilt backs and it felt great to be able use up two of these fabric pieces for this baby quilt.

For the quilt binding I have used a red/white stripe fabric by Sevenberry - this is a regular repeat stripe across the width of the fabric, although the white stripe is slightly wider than the red stripe.

This latest collection has been released in two color stories; a bright and a neutral color palette. Pictured here today is the bright color palette, and who doesn't like a good rainbow of colors? The bright color palette consists of twenty fabrics, two distinct designs as pictured above, and printed in twenty different colors ranging from soft pastels to dark and saturated in color.

This was such a fun project to work on! Fun because I love a good scrap buster quilt - I do actually enjoy methodically working my way through my fabric stash and cutting a small piece here and there for whatever project I am working on - and I love to continue challenging my sewing skills (although these inset seams are not as tricky as they look!).

One Patch Quilt - Row Houses | © Red Pepper Quilts 2018 #onepatchquilt #scrapquilt #patchworkquilt #redpepperquilts

I have quilted this quilt by first ditch-stitching all of the straight horizontal seam lines, and then adding vertical lines of stitching through both the center of each of the little houses as well as in the seam of the houses. This has created a rectangular grid of quilting lines, adding interest in an understated way, and allowing the fabrics to tell the story. There is a lot to see!

For the back of the quilt I have used a hoarded much loved floral fabric from the popular Katie Jump Rope collection by Denyse Schmidt. I do have a significant stash of "backing fabrics" - yardage bought specifically for a quilt back. These are usually fabrics that I LOVE, but I have difficulty parting with. However, it is only fabric and now is as good a time as any to use these stashed fabrics. And I am super pleased with this combination of prints and the bright and cheerful backing fabric.

For the quilt binding I have stayed true to my signature style ... a black and white stripe fabric. This particular black/white stripe fabric is by Sevenberry; the stripe is a regular repeat however the black stripe is slightly narrower in width than the white stripe.

One Patch Quilt - Row Houses

Work in Progress.
One Patch Quilt - Row Houses | © Red Pepper Quilts 2018 #onepatchquilt #scrapquilt #patchworkquilt

A new week and a new project! This quilt is everything that I love about fabric and patchwork. I love a scrappy quilt and working from stash ... I love working with contrasting - light/dark - fabrics especially playing with low volume fabrics ... and I love a simple patchwork design. I also enjoy a challenge and working with inset seams does exactly that.

One-Patch Quilts (Twenty to Make)

This little book - One-Patch Quilts (Twenty to Make) by Carolyn Forster - caught my eye at the Melbourne Quilt Convention in April. At the time I was working on my Scrappy Apple Core Quilt and the image of the Apple Core Quilt on the cover of the book made me stop and flick through the pages of the book. In doing so I spotted a project with the cutest rows of houses and knew I needed to add it to my list of quilts to make. And so this book came home with me. It is only a little book, but it is a gem for inspiration!

One Patch Quilt - Row Houses | © Red Pepper Quilts 2018 #onepatchquilt #scrapquilt #patchworkquilt

A one-patch quilt is a quilt made from a single repeating shape and featured in the book is inspiration for 20 such projects - each a different patch - in order of difficulty, starting with a square and ending with an apple core shape. Further shapes included are half rectangle triangles, diamonds, kites, half and whole hexagons, jewel, and apple core shapes. The instructions are basic however if you are a sewer with some quilt making experience, and better still experience with inset seams, this is the a great book for ideas and inspiration.

One Patch Quilt - Row Houses | © Red Pepper Quilts 2018 #onepatchquilt #scrapquilt #patchworkquilt

On each project page there is a template for the basic shape at actual size. Rather than photocopy the shape and use a paper template to cut my fabric pieces, I resized my "house" shape so that I could quickly and easily cut a rectangular fabric piece with rotary cutter and ruler, then lob off the corners with a 90 degree angle ruler. I then also marked a ¼" seam line with a pencil around the shape to assist with sewing the inset seams that join the "rooftops" of the shapes together. A time consuming task but worth it for the sake of accuracy.

This quilt with it's many inset seams is not as difficult to sew together as it may look. It does involve a lot of stop/start sewing but you're still only sewing a straight line, and starting and stopping at a marked spot. Furthermore with this quilt design you are only ever working with two horizontal rows at a time when sewing the inset seams (rather than wrangling the whole quilt top under the machine). Once the "rooftop" rows are sewn together (a light row of houses + a dark row of houses), the remainder seams are all long straight seams.
