Modern Big Block Half Square Triangle Quilt |
Well, this one was fun to make! I wanted this quilt to be about the colors, the fabrics and their textures, as well as a study of the lines that are a result of the layout of the Half Square Triangle units. It is a simple quilt but it required the right combination fabrics and some time spent on working out the layout of the units to create movement, whilst balancing the colors and designs of the fabrics.
My starting point for fabric selection was a beautiful light blue Japanese chambray fabric with a subtle texture and soft hand. From there I added several classic colors and prints ~ a red white stripe, black and white polka dot fabric and then focused on adding floral and several textured prints, including a heavier weight hand screen printed fabric by Ink and Spindle. And always just a pop of yellow.
Once the quilt top was complete I immediately basted the quilt and got started on the quilting. This quilt is quilted with closely spaced (1/2" apart) vertical lines. In addition I have quilted extra quilting lines along the diagonal lines created by the layout of the Half Square Triangles.A pattern of diamonds is created where the quilting lines cross as well as a texture that draws in the eye as well as your hand with a need reach out and to touch.
For the back of the quilt I have used a printed Japanese floral fabric with a linen look. It is a cotton fabric by Kokka Fabrics which has been in my stash for some time waiting for just the right project. Being a directional print it was just a few inches too narrow for my quilt top and as such I have added a strip of patchwork fabric along one long edge of the backing fabric - matching those of the quilt top. For the quilt binding I have used an extra narrow black and white stripe fabric also from stash - unfortunately no details on the selvage.

I really like it!
ReplyDeleteSo lovely and fresh, so simple, beautifully chosen fabrics inside and out.
ReplyDeleteExactly the word that came to mind...fresh! That backing is to die for!
ReplyDeleteIt is lovely and I imagine you can see the pattern when looking at the whole quilt. I can't see it in the pictures. I do like those soft blues you have there. It's another beautiful quilt!
ReplyDeleteI love the color combination! Unusual but classic. And the design keeps the eye moving. What a fun quilt!
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt! I'm a fan of hst and this just takes them up a notch. Its gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteOh what line and movement created with the placement of the HSTs! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOh I love it. I love the chambray starting point and how you went from there. The fabric layout is perfect Rita. Well done!
ReplyDeleteThis is just so impressive! The colors and layout just work so perfectly. I just love it! If I tried to do that it would be a big jumble mess, you really have a talent.
ReplyDeleteI am really loving this quilt!!! I need never get tired of that stripped binding either!!! Keep up the great work! You're awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt! The colours and prints and blocks all harmonize so well! I recently made a baby blanket from HSTs cut from 10 inch squares, so I know how difficult it is to work with those big triangles and limited block number to create a pleasing composition! You totally nailed it, of course! :-) Love the backing, too!!
ReplyDeleteOh my-love love love the diagonal quilting.
ReplyDeleteSimple but mesmerizing. I keep looking at it trying to see when you used the HST and then when you chose to add the extra quilting. There is something about this quilt I really love.
