My Gardenvale Kansas Dugout Quilt is finished and I have lots of photos to share all the details. You may already have noticed that the quilting is not my usual style. I have spent some planned time away from my sewing machine and prepared quilts and blog posts for continued eye candy, however getting ahead of myself with quilt projects and blog posts proved to be a stressful and at times overwhelming task.

I try and follow just a few sewing rules that I have set for myself, and avoiding stressful sewing is one of them. As such the quilting for this quilt was outsourced to a professional long arm quilter - Karen Terrens from Quilts on Bastings - who is not only an award winning quilter but also my sister. I think we make a great team, and you can no doubt guess what we chat about when we get together. Karen has quilted an all over edge to edge design called Bountiful Feathers, which is what I had requested.

For the back of the quilt I have used a single fabric from the Mimosa collection by Another Point of View - Leaves in Yellow to complement the colors of the quilt top. I have finished the quilt with a red/white stripe fabric (by Bonnie & Camille for Moda Fabrics), and really like the look of the trimmed "corners" of the quilt. The binding was attached in the same way as I would do normally with the exception being that there were additional mitered corners to sew.

A happy finish ... I love the colors of this quilt (!) and even though I am not used to not making my quilts myself in their entirety (read: I find the need to control every part of every process), I love how it has turned it, and have thoroughly enjoyed working with Karen to finish this quilt.

  2. This is a beautiful quilt and fantastic photography. May I ask how you photographed the first picture so straight and well lit?

    1. Thanks Christa - all my photos are taken outside in daylight. I don't have any lighting equipment. The top photo was taken with the quilt lying flat on the ground (decking), with the camera angled straight down - and me standing on a bench - then edited in Photoshop.

  3. Gorgeous, as always, Rita! I've enjoyed watching blocks made in your class like this popping up on instagram. I hope you enjoyed teaching.
Now, what I really want to know is how I can get my sister to start long-arming? It would make my life so much easier. I might have my work cut out for me though, given she doesn't even own a sewing machine....

  4. I love it! Very vintage and modern looking, at the same time. The corners are great and the red striped binding is a pleasant surprise. Lovely!

  5. Rita, love those corners! Mine aren't very photoworthy. Are these easier for a newbie like me--they don't look so very 90 degrees? How did you do this? BTW--TerrificQuilt!

  6. Honored to have seen it in person!!! Plus all of the "smaller" versions. Having made the small version, I am in complete awe that you made a quilt this size.
Be impressed people. Be very impressed.

  9. Are all your photos taken outside and what program do you use to get them post ready? I have just been having a terrible time trying to get decent pictures for submissions and a quilt memory book I am working on. Do you have a special camera - and what settings do you use? i suspect it is just another manifestation of your many talents!

  13. How silly is it that I thought this was a sale post, and when I read at the end that it wasn't, I wanted to shout hurray! This is far too glorious to let go - I'm so glad you're keeping it. :D

  15. I just finished block no. 100 of the Kansas Dugout I started hand-piecing right after your original tutorial! (And this is definitely making me want to start another with a striking print background like that gingham.) Do you have any trouble working with the straight binding around the angled corners? I was thinking about adding triangles to make my top a square, but I love the way the angled corners look here!

  18. Hi Rita
Have come back to have another look - absolutely lovely quilt as all yours are - I have made a few inspired by you. I really love the gingham print you have used in this and am wondering if you can tell me what it is as I would love to source some? Thanks
