Liberty Tana Lawn and Collage Newsprint ~ A Quilt in Progress

I have a bucket list of quilts that I would like to make. The question "What's next?" however isn't as simple as going to my bucket list and ticking off the next project; usually because I don't feel like making that particular quilt right now, or making 100's of half square triangles/log cabins/flying geese units etc, or simply because I don't have the fabric requirements on hand. Usually the former - I don't fancy doing that right now - rather than the latter.

Sometimes the "what's next" question is answered right in front of my eyes. Whilst working on my Liberty Tana Lawn and Chambray Checkerboard Quilt I received a re-stock order of Newsprint fabric (from the Collage Collection by Carrie Bloomston). It was left sitting on my cutting table in among a small mountain of Liberty Tana Lawn fabric. And there it was, a perfect combination. Right then and there I cut extra Liberty fabric strips for this project.

The Newsprint/Liberty fabric mix is so very different to the elegant Liberty and chambray combination. The text print fabric reads a little grungy but very modern alongside the classic Tana Lawn, with the colors shining seemingly more brightly.

I have again followed the same piecing method as per the
to piece the blocks (although I have cut my fabric strips wider and longer).

QUICK QUILT FACTS
Collage Newsprint fabric and Liberty Tana Lawn fabrics were cut
as strips measuring 2.5 inches x 11 inches (this will make more sense when
read in conjunction with the strip piecing tutorial).
I made 90 16-patch blocks ~  a total of 1440 patches of fabric,
and I used more than 100 different Liberty Tana Lawn fabrics.
Quilt top measures 64 inches x 80 inches.

This quilt top is big - measuring 64 inches x 80 inches - and involved a number of hours of relaxing strip piecing, chain piecing, and pressing. Easy sewing. I really like the messages that read throughout the patchwork fabric ... Art is good. Make something that you like. Make a mess. Take a risk. Don't worry if it's perfect.

Now ready for basting.

  13. I LOVE that newsprint fabric. How do you get all of your squares to line up perfectly? No matter how hard I try, mine always end up a little off.

  15. Definitely not too many pictures--they are all lovely!! I have that same text print--have been saving it for the right quilt pattern, but I have NO Liberty prints. I keep seeing them all over the internet, so maybe it is time I actually buy some!! Thanks for the inspiration--your quilt is beautiful!!

  17. Another fabulous quilt. The newsprint fabric looks sooo good. I've a pile of modern fabric that I'm about to start cutting to make this quilt, or one like it. Usually I use Civil War repro fabrics, so this might be a challenge putting these fabrics together. Oh, and definitely not too many pictures, can't get enough pictures.

  20. Beautiful, beautiful. Love all the photos. It's amazing how sometimes the fabrics seem to find each other with any help from us at all. I was digging last night for a particular fabric (that's gone missing) and found another that I'd completely forgotten about. That's on it's way to being my latest big project - I've made 4 small quilt tops in the last few days - I feel a larger one on the horizon. Happy patchworking!

  22. Love that newsprint fabric. Makes me think of the paper that was often found inside vintage quilts.

  23. I''ve just found your blog and absolutely LOVE it. I'm going through it slowly and glad that it will take me a long time.
I see that you have a huge fabric stash. How do you store your fabric? Is there a system where you can easily find it? I've love to see your work room!

  25. Such a pretty quilt! Love the contrast between the pretty Liberty fabrics and the text ones. As you say the text prints make the a Liberty ones sparkle even more brightly.

  26. Love it! I made a tablecloth last year with tana lawn charms and a vanilla-coloured text print and I love the antique-looking combo. This whiter print you've chosen really brightens up the florals and it all looks so fresh and pretty!

  30. SO beautiful Rita!! Never enough photos of beauty. You know I love your quilts and work. This one is perfect! Will it be for sale in your Etsy shop? I expect it shall be quite expensive as it should be for all your talent and hard work. Although it looks so lovely and easy when you do it. Perhaps it is already spoken for. Just wondering. Always ever so gratefully yours, Luba (Canada)
