And just like that another week has flown by! It's been a busy one with lots of behind the scenes sewing and another intense but very successful class with Kellie Wulfsohn from the Don't Look Now! fame.
This wasn't my first attempt at learning free motion quilting - I have read several books and watched online videos without success - but I think I am now finally starting to get the feel of it. There's nothing like being able to actually observe an expert quilter in motion and listen to, and take heed of, their advice and quilting tips. I can highly recommend taking a quilting class; Kellie is a wonderful teacher and I've have learned so much more than I could have ever imagined from participating in these classes.
At home there has been some discussion as to the placement of the birds (the who's who?) on this Family Tree. Even though the birds were placed at random there is apparently much to be read in their position amongst the branches. Who knew?
I have also been working on piecing a quilt back for the Flower Sugar HST Quilt top finished earlier this week.
It looks really beautiful Rita!
ReplyDeletewow a bit of a change of style - love it!! I'd love to take one of Kellie's classes! Bit a a trek from Perth - but maybe one day... well done on your free motion - it looks awesome!! :)

ReplyDeleteIt looks absolutely wonderful - I'm in awe at your FMQ :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous little quilt and super quilting!
ReplyDeleteI have on my to-do list this year, to do a free motion quilting class. I haven't had much luck at home on my own and I have no patience at the moment, due to struggling a 3 year old and a new born.
ReplyDeleteFabulous applique and quilting Rita, you are amazing! xo
ReplyDeleteLOVE, LOVE, LOVE your family tree and the quilting!! Awesome job! I also like the quilt back, too.
ReplyDeleteI have just finished a top using the Flower Sugar range....it is soo lovely! very springlike and happy!!
ReplyDeleteMakes me wish I were in Australia! This is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteRita, this is a beautiful Family tree. That is some serious FMQ you've done, you must be proud.
ReplyDeleteThat is so cute! Love the polka birds!
ReplyDeletehow lovely Rita...deep rooted in my mind...You certainly branch out in many directions, each one as sweet as the last.
ReplyDeleteYour tree turned out beautifully! Sounds like a great class.
ReplyDeleteWow! Really adorable!! I would love to take a class with Kellie! And it would be great to visit Australia. I don't think my husband would go for it, though!! Ha!
ReplyDeleteYour FMQ looks incredible, such a pro!
ReplyDeleteLove how the applique stands out from the quilting. I made something similar at Thanksgiving as a gift for my mother-in-law (it was a thankful tree), but I quilted the sandwich before appliqueing the tree and leaves.
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful, and your quilting is amazing! I will have to find a class!!
ReplyDeleteCertainly too much to do and so little time! I would love to take a quilting class with Kellie - her work is amazing and put it along side your style and creativity and I can only imagine the beauty!
ReplyDeleteThe is amazing. The colors are beautiful.
ReplyDeletewonderful colors. And great quilting! I don't sell my quilts so my free-motion is less-than-perfect and I am ok with it ;)
ReplyDeleteSo little time! My girls just dumped out my notions drawers to make elastic/ribbon/bias tape "cakes." I spent so long winding everything up... it is like that little time is erased! Ah, crafting with kids...
Looks gorgeous--love those black/white birdies and the touch of orange in the leaves! Flower sugar is such a pretty line of fabric--you've been busy! What one quilting tip did you learn that helped you the most? (I really struggle with the machine quilting)
ReplyDeleteThe fabric used for the birds gives it a very whimsical look.
ReplyDeleteYour FMQ looks so lovely. Thanks for encouraging us to take a class. I'm looking forward to taking one at the Sewing Summit! Cute little birds =)
ReplyDeleteYour family tree looks beautiful, Rita! Love the fabrics - especially for the birds - and your quilting.
ReplyDeleteIt is gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteStunning!!!
ReplyDeleteOh wow, that quilting is BEAUTIFUL! Well done!
ReplyDeleteCompletely impressed. I love Don't Look Now! How awesome to take an actual class from her.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I compromised and bought 6 yards of grey shot cotton...
The tree looks great, I did something similar with my kids last year for the school auction - Very clever. :)
ReplyDeleteI like that you left the tree branches unquilted to give it the dimensional look. It is quite beautiful. I am interested in the HST one under, that you are working on. The pieces look bigger. Is it one of your patterns? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI have been lucky enough to get a very private class from Kellie. She is AMAZING.
ReplyDeleteIf you get a chance to learn from her - GO!
You did a GREAT JOB!
Fantastic work!
(I can hear Kellie tell me to "relax my shoulders" now...)
Beautiful Family Tree - I love the colours and the crisp white background. The quilting looks fantastic.
ReplyDeleteThis is so gorgeous, I really love those little birds. So simple but so expressive too.
ReplyDeleteLove this tree & I think the birds are perfect .
ReplyDeleteThe quilting is GREAT !!
Rita, stunning small quilt wonder where you will put this new found skill to use I look forward to that. x Lesley
ReplyDeleteWhat nice labor and that wonderful combination of colors … .te congratulate. I have liked very much (he forgives do not write anything in English well) kisses from Spain
ReplyDeleteI love that little family tree quilt! Can you give us the low-down on bird placement? I have no clue and I know I'll forget to ask Kellie next time I see her LOL!
ReplyDeleteHi Rita. Just wondering the dimensions of this quilt. Do you have a pattern for it?
