Some time ago I stashed my first layer cake, Dream On by Urban Chiks for Moda. It has been quietly waiting for inspiration to strike and I have finally challenged myself to make a quilt with just ONE layer cake and a single solid fabric.
Take 1 - A Layer Cake Quilt
Quilt measures 50.5 inches x 62.5 inches
I quickly learned that there wasn't much room for experimentation with my Layer Cake fabrics, and worked out really easy (and quick) cutting and sewing technique to ensure that no fabric was wasted. When all was said and done, there were a handful of scraps leftover.
This quilt has been quilted with diagonal lines (again!) from edge to edge, a sharp and clean look that I am still loving. Less is more.
You can find the Take 1 ~ A Layer Cake Quilt Pattern in my Etsy Store

Great idea - for those of us without the cash to buy yards and yards of fabulous designer fabrics - I think layer cake + solids is a great way to go.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt and wonderful combination of layer cake and one solid. The green and orange is a wonderful fresh look.
ReplyDeleteI'm sitting here in the early morning, groggy from another hot, sleepless night in Southern California. I have your blog on my Google reader and love seeing all that you create. So seeing this lovely quilt this early (hot) morning is like a fresh piece of cool luscious fruit being handed to me through my computer screen. You made my day. Keep up the good work!

Love the green background! It reminds me of my parents' wedding pictures, those were their colours.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color combos there, orange and green! I LOVE the bright green with the Dream On! Pretty!
ReplyDeleteThe green is perfect for the quilt! And I would love to know the designer of the orange polka dot fabric if you would share....
ReplyDeleteLovely work!
The Orange Polka Dot fabric is a Japanese Import - Kei Honeycomb in Orange

ReplyDeleteThis turned out great. I especially love the orange dot binding!
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty quilt!! Good work!!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous. So simple and clean looking.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a nice quit. I have a green very similar to this shade you used. I thought it was so out of my comfort zone. This quilt, however, I like a lot, so thanks for showing me a way to go.
ReplyDeleteSuperb idea Rita! Love the colors as I am thinking of doing a yellow, pink and orange combo next!
ReplyDeleteThis screams Spring to me. A perfect quilt to take on a picnic. Gorgeous colour choices and a lovely design.

ReplyDeleteGood looking quilt.
I love the strips along the top and bottom, and the green was a lovely choice. Beautiful!
ReplyDeletevery pretty quilt! thanks for sharing,Amy
ReplyDeleteWow, I love it!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy not having any scraps left at the end of a project. I'm not much of a scrap hoarder (anything smaller than a charm square goes in a bag to give to quilty friends who want them!), so it's a nice clean finish to a project!
It is a lovely quilt, a great use of a layer cake.
ReplyDeleteHow auspicious - since I have just ONE fabulous layer cake of BLiss that needs a yummy pattern like this one! Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYou did a beautiful job with just one! I love the lime green solid too, perfect match!
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful.
ReplyDeletegood personal challenge... and beautiful result!
ReplyDeleteLove it - cheerful, colourful and playful exactly what a good quilt should be.
ReplyDeletegood grief you are clever! If I had an ounce of your talent I would be one happy chick. this looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteI have that layer cake!
ReplyDelete(and now that pattern. . .)
Love it!
Gorgeous - will have to get the pattern...I have never bought a layer cake - can you believe it?!
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous quilt. I really want to make one, I haven't yet though. I am thinking of Amy Butlers sexy hexy for Christmas for my hubby but i might just have to practice with this one!
ReplyDeleteOooh, she's a beauty! I loooove the lime green -- beautiful job!
ReplyDeleteKudos Rita...I have been less than thrilled with precuts because you end up with SO many prints, even though they all match, and the resulting quilt (charm/jelly roll/whatever)is just too visually busy.
ReplyDeleteCombining the precut pack with a single solid was brilliant! Hmmmm...maybe I should take another look at those charm packs I put away! I buy them to preview lines, choosing what to buy online...but never had a way to use them after. Now I do. Thanks!
Fabulous. Divine green. I have a jelly roll of dream on, you have inspired me to use it. xo
ReplyDeleteLOVE this pattern.....!!!
ReplyDeleteI.think.I.have.to.have.it.
:)
Thank you!

Made my grand baby a quilt out of ALL Dream On and I have the Moda Basics Lime on hand and never thought of putting it together. It's a fabulous combination Rita!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty, I love the green.
ReplyDeleteWow- I love that new line. It looks lovely with the green.
ReplyDeleteI just made this quilt and mistakenly sent it to the recipient without taking a photo! Went by really quickly - really fun to make. Your pattern was very easy to follow, too! Definitely will make it again.
