Custom made insert surrounds the sewing machine and sits flush with the top of the workstation.
Having this workstation makes quilting just so much easier; I am seriously spoiled. The weight of the quilt is well-supported by the large workspace thereby avoiding most of the tugging and dragging that can result in irregular stitches, uneven quilting and even distortion of the finished quilt.
Here is a view from above my workspace giving a better indication of just how large my work surface is. I have also positioned my sewing machine directly in front of a large window providing much natural light and winter sun.
Spring has arrived though, and I am in the mood for a quilt project that I can immerse myself in. I have chosen a more challenging quilt pattern with each finished block having 32 different templates. I have copied, cut, pasted on to lightweight cardboard, and color coded the templates. A test block is in progress.

I have a set-up similar to yours. It is so nice to have all that table top surface for the quilt! I'm intrigued by your next project!
ReplyDeleteI have my Aurora 440 in a Horn Cabinet as well.... I really like the fact that I can flip the leaf down or up behind the machine depending upon what I'm doing.

ReplyDeleteFantastic space. My husband built me a custom sewing cabinet with a huge leaf I can have up or down. Plus my machine also sits flush. Now if I just wanted to machine quilt larger projects! I just LOVE the green on your quilt.

ReplyDeleteI have one of those Horn cabinets as well and I love it! I bought it a few years ago along with a Bernina 1630 and a serger from a lady who had bought it 10 years ago and NEVER used any of it. Now I just need to buy a walking foot. It's on my Christmas list!! Your quilts are gorgeous!

I love the room of the workstation. I am curious - do you ever wish that you had more room on the right of the sewing machine to set things down? I'm right handed and fear I'd need more room there.

ReplyDeleteI'm thinking about ways to set up my new sewing room and after my machine quilting workshop with Kellie, I love the idea of your setup.
I know that you're definitely a quilter, but I do sew a few other things now and then. With the setup that you have, how hard is it to raise the machine? If I needed it higher to make dresses, and get the garment over the, um, arm (?) is it possible to lift it up? Once it's locked in with that clear insert - is it locked in for good?
