Custom made insert surrounds the sewing machine and sits flush with the top of the workstation.
Having this workstation makes quilting just so much easier; I am seriously spoiled. The weight of the quilt is well-supported by the large workspace thereby avoiding most of the tugging and dragging that can result in irregular stitches, uneven quilting and even distortion of the finished quilt. Here is a view from above my workspace giving a better indication of just how large my work surface is. I have also positioned my sewing machine directly in front of a large window providing much natural light and winter sun.
Spring has arrived though, and I am in the mood for a quilt project that I can immerse myself in. I have chosen a more challenging quilt pattern with each finished block having 32 different templates. I have copied, cut, pasted on to lightweight cardboard, and color coded the templates. A test block is in progress.
More details to follow soon.
I have a set-up similar to yours. It is so nice to have all that table top surface for the quilt! I'm intrigued by your next project!
ReplyDeleteI have my Aurora 440 in a Horn Cabinet as well.... I really like the fact that I can flip the leaf down or up behind the machine depending upon what I'm doing.
ReplyDeleteHappy Sewing!!
Wow, what a great setup! Makes my tiny sewing table look like a little kid's play set :)

ReplyDeleteYou really have a wonderful set up! I have a nice big table but I wish my machine was set down in it like that... some day!
ReplyDeleteYou certainly do take advantage of your luck with all the beautiful quilts you create!
oh i am very interested in what you are testing out, it looks so fun and round!!! That table and work surface is amazing. I am always trying to shove things out of the way and make room for the quilt to be worked on
ReplyDeletenow i'm super jealous!! i so need a table like that!
ReplyDeleteI am as green with envy as your Jaffa quilt...one day Rita, I hope to have that set up! Lucky you and VERY well deserved.
ReplyDeleteI think I need one too, off to work the budget!
ReplyDeletei just bought myself a new bernina...i'd love to know more about your workstation.

ReplyDeleteOh I am green with envy!! How wonderful is your new setup Rita, I'm so happy for you, and look forward to seeing what masterpieces you will create here. Your new block looks very interesting. xo
ReplyDeleteFantastic space. My husband built me a custom sewing cabinet with a huge leaf I can have up or down. Plus my machine also sits flush. Now if I just wanted to machine quilt larger projects! I just LOVE the green on your quilt.
ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky! I small table-thing on my bernina doesn't work well with the weight of quilts. Great quilt too!
ReplyDeleteA fantastic sewing space. No wonder your quilts are just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI have been coveting one of those Horn cabinets for quite a while. Saving my pennies!
ReplyDeleteI have one of those Horn cabinets as well and I love it! I bought it a few years ago along with a Bernina 1630 and a serger from a lady who had bought it 10 years ago and NEVER used any of it. Now I just need to buy a walking foot. It's on my Christmas list!! Your quilts are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYour work is so beautiful! I look forward to reading your blog every day. I am, however, missing the list on your sidebar of your favorite fabric shopping sites. Might you consider putting it back up? You inspire me!
ReplyDeleteYour quilting space is amazing. I am a bit jealous, and inspired (as always, when I peek in on your blog)....I even showed my husband to plant seeds of gift ideas in his head.
ReplyDeleteIf anyone deserves such a wonderful setup its definitely you Rita :-)
ReplyDeleteYou will be so happy now - I have the cabinet with the extension like that - one word of warning - don't let it become a clutter space, very tempting! Your new project sounds exciting!
ReplyDeleteHugs - Lurline♥
I love the room of the workstation. I am curious - do you ever wish that you had more room on the right of the sewing machine to set things down? I'm right handed and fear I'd need more room there.
ReplyDeleteSounds absolutely wonderful. Making sewing even easier..can't beat that!
ReplyDeleteHi Rita! I have a question - where did you get the insert from? I have a Horn cabinet and now that I'm actually making quilts I reckon that I could do with an insert for my machine. It's a great setup.
ReplyDeleteHi Rita! I have a question too about this!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking about ways to set up my new sewing room and after my machine quilting workshop with Kellie, I love the idea of your setup.
I know that you're definitely a quilter, but I do sew a few other things now and then. With the setup that you have, how hard is it to raise the machine? If I needed it higher to make dresses, and get the garment over the, um, arm (?) is it possible to lift it up? Once it's locked in with that clear insert - is it locked in for good?
Thanks heaps!
