Daisy Inspiration

Last weekend my boys (husband and son) made their way to Adelaide to watch their favorite football team play in a final game.  Much to their dismay their team was annihilated.  However, something good has come from their trip away as it gave me the perfect excuse to fill in time by visiting my local patchwork store.

One of my closest patchwork stores is Patchwork House, and I like to drop in occasionally just to see and touch what is on the shelves.  This visit I was inspired by and purchased this medium weight fat quarter.

Furthermore, this fabric immediately struck a chord.  I knew instantly how I could use this fabric as a feature and practice my free motion quilting on my new sewing machine.  It is 100% cotton fabric embossed with a daisy flower and an overall slightly crinkled texture.

I have really enjoyed finding fabric from my stash to compliment the new purchase and have pieced together a strip of fabrics to feature in the new quilt that I am now free motion quilting.

I have yet to feel comfortable with the whole free motion quilting process, but using the daisies embossed in the fabric as a guide has made it so much easier. It has provided me with insight into my new machine and a better feeling of the motion required to obtain smooth curves and even stitches.

The Daisy Chain Quilt is progressing well.  I am ever so pleased with how the quilting is going, and hope to show a finished product soon. I guess it is all about just doing it, and practicing.

  2. Great inspiration. Free motion doesn't work with marking - although some try - but this is a good way to break it in. The more you do it the easier it becomes. And love the fabric combo you have going on!

  10. Sorry about they boy's team, sadly it was mine that beat theirs. In our recent WEA machine quilting course the teacher said you had to try and think ahead when it comes to machine quilting. Try to anticipate the next move before you do it. A bit like driving around a corner, you know it's coming up, so you turn that way. It sounds kind of weird but it's true. Just a little tip.

  16. I love, not only the fabrics you found, but all the fabrics that you put together in your strip. I am sure that it will be beautiful once complete. I am anxious to follow your ventures into free motion quilting....it is something that still intimidates me. I absolutely ADORE the idea of using the flowers!! It will add such a wonderful touch.

  17. Nice job free motion quilting the daisy chain. Looks great. I've been a hand quilt for several years and have been attempting to learn how to free motion quilt for the last couple of weeks. I think one of my most difficult stumbling blocks to overcome is my need for perfection. I purchased a large scale print to practice with and although it looks a little off on the front side, it looks great on the back. Thanks for the encouragement to keep practicing.
