Fall 2014 Cotton and Steel Quilt Top Click on any image for larger view. |
I was very fortunate to get my hands on the entire Fall 2014 Cotton and Steel Collection from Quilt Market. The new collection is again huge - 5 different quilting cotton collections - and I may like them even a little more than the debut Cotton and Steel collection. So much so in fact that I couldn't wait to cut into them (after photographing each new collection for yet to come Sunday Stash posts).
Most of the fabrics used for this quilt top are from the soon to be released collections (due in stores in January 2015). All 5 collections are represented, although not the entire range is included, nor does this represent the full color palette. I have chosen a softer color palette, limited the darker prints (such as the navy and purple prints) and injected a little zing by including the lime green fabrics. You may also note that I have also used several prints from the first Cotton and Steel range; both collections work so well together!
I am so impressed with new C & S collection, the color palette is wonderful, and the designs feel a little more "me" than the original collection. I also note that there are less prints with metallic detail, which I prefer. I am not into glitz on fabric, but I accept that we are all different!
Another awesome feature is that each fabric has the most wonderful selvage. I love that the C & S team have taken the time to annotate the selvage with all the details including the inspiration for each collection. I do collect selvages (and have many selvages that are waiting for the "right" project - hopefully 2015 is the year for selvage inspiration to strike), although I don't normally cut them as wide I have here, but I had a small project in mind ...
More soon!
Thank you for stopping by,
Rita
Can't wait to see this.
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful work. Are you planning to incorporate the selvedges on to the quilt back?
ReplyDeleteStriking!! Look forward to seeing the next stage… Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year to you and your family Rita, C xo
ReplyDeleteLove this quilt Rita! I'm also a selvage-aholic and have a large bag full of them in anticipation of making a quilt :-)
ReplyDeleteThe color and bold patterns in this collection is a bit overwhelming to me, but the way you've cut the squares small and pulled out the lights seems much more appealing. You have a way to really showcase the best of a piece of fabric.
ReplyDeleteI love the way you have used it all - and those selvages are definitely cool! What a great collection of fabrics for you, I have just more than a bit of quilter's envy! Have a super Christmas and New Year!
ReplyDeleteRita, you do a lot of projects like this one and they are beautiful, but I wonder what size your squares are? I suspect they are not as small as I am thinking. Do you have a favorite?
ReplyDeleteHi Julie - thank you for stopping by! The squares are 3 inch finished squares (cut as 3.5 inch squares). Do I have a favorite size square for patchwork? 3 or 4 inch size (finished) squares seems to suit me, but it does depend on the design of the fabric; smaller squares work well with small scale prints, although there really aren't any rules. Rita
DeleteI love all the intricate patterns that you create but I also love the random ones, I have been mainly doing random ones myself, my kids love them
ReplyDeletethose selvedges look great- lots of promise there!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this lovely new fabric line with us! I love the selvedges! I haven't used them in designs but they look accomodating enough for everyone! Happy Holidays!
ReplyDeleteThe C + S selvage is delicious. I can't believe how wonderfully thsoe different collections come together in this quilt top. Can't wait to see the full quilt :) How big are those squares BTW?
ReplyDeleteThe quilt top is beautiful. Those fabrics are the prettiest I have seen anywhere. So, I think if I read your Sunday stash post on these, I should be able to order the ones that I have drooled over. I'm not very good at ordering fabric on line because I like to touch and carry it around and mix and match. I just need your trash/scraps. Can't wait to see the quilt once it is complete.
