Spools and Nine-Patches ~ A Quilt in Progress

Spools and 9 Patches - work in progress | Red Pepper Quilts

A change of direction. My Spool Blocks were looking great and I was pleased with the ease with which they were coming together, but whilst procrastinating (over having to make another 50 Spool Blocks) I started to play around with a block which I could alternate the Spool Blocks with in the quilt layout.

And so that is how these nine-patch blocks came about. Now if only I had planned this from the start for then I would have made 6" finished Spool Blocks rather than 5" finished Spool Blocks, and I then therefore would not have needed to make 5" finished nine-patch blocks. The math was messy to say the least. But if nothing else, I am determined and pushed on regardless.

I am glad I did for it was worth it. I like how the addition of the nine-patch block has created a whole new look, how different shapes form depending on the light/dark color play. The quilt top is a riot of color, but I don't mind it, and rather reminded me of my Scrappy Trip Along Quilt as I was piecing it.

Now ready for basting, quilting and binding.

  3. I would have taken the easy route and done a 5" solid square, so I admire your commitment to the direction the quilt took you! I love the optical illusion the shapes play on the eye!

  6. Like Beth, I really like the optical illusion of the shapes. It's the type of quilt that gets and maintains attention.

  10. The secondary patterns this forms are delightful. A good lesson in leaving yourself open to changes in plan...

  22. I've been following your blog for some time now and must say you have an outstanding eye for color. I don't think I've seen anyone else with such a keen eye for color combination as you have. I really wish you would post a blog discussing color selection, combination, balance, etc. for those of us that could use some help. Do you have a design wall that you arrange on or do you just wing-it? Love your quilts. This one is fantastic but I'm especially fond of your low-volume quilts.

  25. It's really cool how the gingham pieces look going straight on the 9 patch and diagonal on some of the spools!!:)

  26. I like math, but 5 inch 9-patch blocks just sounds annoying, Kudos for sticking with it; I'm not sure if I would have done that!

  27. I love the nine patch alternating with the spool block, so many fun shapes between the blocks. A 5" nine patch sounds pretty darn tricky though!! ;)
