Earlier this month I was asked to be a guest speaker at a local meeting of the Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild. It was with hesitation that I accepted this invitation as the mere thought of public speaking can make me break out in a cold sweat. I much prefer being the "behind the screen" persona; quilter, blogger.
In addition, I was also asked demonstrate my machine stitched binding technique, and that I can do - without any problem. In preparation for the binding demonstration I made this simple baby quilt using the Bella collection by Lotta Jansdotter as well as additional fabrics from stash.
The finished quilt measures 28 inches x 35.5 inches (or 71cm x 91cm) and has been quilted with edge to edge straight lines, outlining all seam lines, as well as a diagonal set of lines intersecting in the center of each block.
The back of the quilt features a large scale floral print from the Sanctuary collection by Patty Young, which complements the color palette of the Bella collection beautifully.
I have listed this baby quilt in my Etsy Store.
You can see the listing details here: Modern Patchwork Baby Quilt
I am so glad to have had the opportunity to meet with the members of the Melbourne MQG! They are a warm, friendly and talented group of quilters and they couldn't have made me feel any more welcome. I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with everyone and taking a peek at their work in progress. Thank you, ladies!

The thought of public speaking makes me break out in a cold sweat too, but I sure would have loved to have the opportunity to demonstrate your binding technique.
ReplyDeleteDitto on the binding technique. Your edges are always sharp and defined. They look great. Love your work. Your knack for color is wonderful.
ReplyDeletelove the little quilt
ReplyDeleteI am amazed you can get your binding looking so neat doing it this way! Have you ever tried it with bias binding? Or do you find it works better with straight-grain binding?
ReplyDeleteI love Bella! Beautiful quilt. I tried your binding method on my last quilt and it worked beautifully!
ReplyDeleteThat tutorial was amazing! Thats the first time I've ever pinned on the back and it totally worked out beautifully! Thanks for you tips!
ReplyDeleteAn eye catching quilt. Truly a beauty! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI love the color combo you used here. You take a simple arrangement and make it pop!
ReplyDeleteAs always thank you for sharing!
This is perfect. I just got a fat quarter bundle of this. I may have to "borrow" your inspiration ; )
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt as always Rita. Too bad someone didn't tape your binding demonstration!
ReplyDeleteGreat "up-close" photos of your stitching, thanks, .... and another beautiful quilt!
ReplyDeleteAnother winner. Love your bindings.
ReplyDeletegorgeous quilt Rita, and I bet you had everyone jostling for the best position to watch you do your machine-sewn binding demo!!
ReplyDeleteI have read and used your tutorial so many times, it's the best one I've ever found for machine-sewn binding. I still need LOTS more practice to get the technique working better, but it beats hand-sewing binding down by a mile.
see you, Catherine x
LOVE this quilt Rita! It can so easily go boy or girl with the colors but definitely the flower back says girl all the way. I also just got a fat quarter of this bundle. Hmmmm.....:o) Boy oh boy I would have been front and center at that demonstration. I'm just starting my 4th quilt and have machine stitched binding on two of my three. I'm not sure I'm cut out for machine stitched binding. :o(
ReplyDeleteLove your tutorial - saw it some months ago, when my fingers was very tired from hand-sewing binding, and has been machine binding since. - It works for me to.
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you for telling the size in cm too - I am not good at inches (we use cm in Denmark)
love love love this quilt
ReplyDeleteLove the binding on this quilt Where can I get it?
