I hope you will bear with me today as I have loads of pictures of the finished "In A Spin" Quilt to share with you.
This was probably one of the most fun quilts to make! I really enjoyed playing around with the vintage fabrics, ensuring that I could get the most use out of the limited fabrics on hand, whilst still fussy cutting the triangles.
.
This quilt is relatively easy to make, although it does require just the right mix of fabrics; narrow and wide stripes, some bold, others neutral. Careful handling of bias edges is also recommended - use a quick burst of spray starch for loosely woven fabrics if necessary.
I have quilted this quilt by once again stitching on both sides of all seam lines. I do like my quilts to look more densely quilted and I have therefore repeated this process twice more, stitching a total of three lines on each side of a seam line (6 lines for each seam). The lines are stitched just over 1/2 inch apart (the width of my presser foot), and have created a dense grid which has in turn added loads of character to the quilt.
For the back of the quilt I have used a print called Neo Geo by Jackie Shapiro. I had purchased multiple yardage of this print and thought it appropriate to use a geometric print for this particular quilt.
For the binding I had contemplated using a striped fabric to stay with the overall theme of the quilt, however my heart ruled my head and I have used a binding fabric - Kei Honeycomb in black with white polka dots. I don't regret it, I love the obvious contrast!

ReplyDeleteWow Rita, that is so fab. Lining up all those stripes - you've done a great job. Love the binding, too. I have to say that none of the early photos made me feel 'sea sick', but I do think your final layout (mix of thick & thin stripes, plus loud & neutral colours) is spot on.

Your dotted binding reminded me of something one of my quilting mentors always says: lines love curves.
ReplyDeleteQuestion about your label: is it printed on twill tape and then sewn to an unfinished-edge piece of fabric? It looks awesome!
Rita - I never tire of looking at your quilts. This one is as gorgeous as always! I have quilt envy for sure!
ReplyDeleteLovely quilt. I can quite imagine it tripping around Australia somewhere in a vintage caravan with lime green and yellow stripes ...
ReplyDeletei love the bright & bold colours congrats on the beautiful quilt. i love that you used vintage fabric!!
ReplyDeletethis is awesome! did you attach your label before or after quilting? do the stitches show through on the top?
ReplyDeleteThat is really stunning Rita

ReplyDeleteIts just PERFECT!!
ReplyDeleteThis is incredible!! Your attention to detail blows me away every time I check in on your blog!
ReplyDeleteOh, Rita! LOVE it! In a Spin is such fun -- those stripes were meant to become that quilt! I got a couple of reclaimed stripes packs from Whimsie Dots last year but mine haven't reached their full potential as yours have. :-)
ReplyDeleteThat is one fun and vibrant quilt! I'm always learning! I forgot what stripes could do...
ReplyDeleteyou amaze me.....great quilt!
ReplyDeleteThis makes me giddy!!! I love it!
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the most cool quilts I've ever seen! Way to go! I looked at your ETSY shop and was shocked to see how CHEAPLY you are selling it for!!! I wish I could buy it - it's so great and it's so cheap but I just got back from a once in a life time trip to Italy - and I'm broke! And since I can't buy it I think you should DOUBLE the price - that's just too much work to give it away! xo, Nan
ReplyDeleteoh my god! i love this quilt! i just fell across your blog and am in love with everything. Is there anywhere i could get this pattern? I have the perfect stash of stripes for it and i am in love with this quilt!
ReplyDeleteHi Rita
ReplyDeleteThis is totally wonderful!
I would love to have a go at a mini quilt version of this, but was wondering if there is a way to do a white square with a striped border with mitred corners as a contrast?
